R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Nick Jimenez is retiring as editorial page editor of |
|
the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in 2009, drawing to a close a |
|
successful career in journalism that has spanned more than four |
|
decades; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Jimenez began working with the Caller-Times in |
|
1968, when it was still two newspapers, the morning Caller and the |
|
afternoon Times, and he covered city and county government as well |
|
as the police and court beats for both papers; from the start, he |
|
proved himself to be a determined and resourceful reporter; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1978, Mr. Jimenez became assistant city editor of |
|
the Times, and then city editor of both papers; he was promoted to |
|
associate editor in 1989, and in 1994 he took over as editor of the |
|
Caller-Times editorial page; and |
|
WHEREAS, In that position, Mr. Jimenez earned a reputation as |
|
a fair, tough-minded, and coolheaded writer and editor who took |
|
seriously the editor's role of formulating and articulating the |
|
debate on issues of interest to the community; furthermore, he has |
|
been a valued mentor to several generations of young journalists; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Jimenez has also demonstrated his commitment to |
|
the community through his active engagement with the PTA, his |
|
church, and his neighborhood association; he has played an active |
|
role with the paper's annual Christmas Appeal, which has raised |
|
$2.6 million for needy children since 1973, and he coordinated the |
|
Distinguished Scholars program, which recognizes 18 outstanding |
|
high school students every year; and |
|
WHEREAS, In recognition of his many civic contributions, Mr. |
|
Jimenez was recognized with the William R. Burleigh Award for |
|
Distinguished Community Service from the Scripps Howard Foundation |
|
in 2006; in 2001, he received the Jack Douglas Award from the Texas |
|
Associated Press Managing Editors Association for creating the |
|
Buster Haas Minority Internship Program, which places summer |
|
interns with small Texas newspapers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Even in retirement, Mr. Jimenez plans to continue to |
|
serve the paper as editor emeritus, and the citizens of Corpus |
|
Christi will continue to benefit from his experience and |
|
perspective; and |
|
WHEREAS, Greatly respected by his colleagues for his |
|
integrity, professionalism, and commitment to excellence, Nick |
|
Jimenez may indeed take great pride in his 41-year record of |
|
outstanding journalism as he embarks on the next exciting chapter |
|
of his life; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Nick Jimenez on his retirement as |
|
editorial page editor of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and extend |
|
to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Jimenez as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
