R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The team from Entertainment Series of Irving took
  top honors in the "Irving Trivia--the City and the Man" contest at
  Valley Ranch Library on April 19, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Irving Heritage Society, the Irving
  Public Library, and the Irving Independent School District, the
  contest was part of "Celebrating Irving--The City and the Man," a
  monthlong commemoration of the 226th birthday of the American
  writer Washington Irving, author of the classic story "Rip van
  Winkle" and the namesake of the city of Irving; and
         WHEREAS, The trivia contest tested each team's knowledge of
  the history of the city of Irving and the life of Washington Irving;
  11 teams entered the preliminary rounds, with four making it to the
  finals at Valley Ranch Library; and
         WHEREAS, The winning team from Entertainment Series of Irving
  scored an early victory by knowing that, in Washington Irving's
  story, the character Rip van Winkle left his home to get away from
  his nagging wife; they triumphed after a grueling round of 16
  tiebreaker and 2 sudden-death questions by knowing that the monks
  who founded the Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving were
  originally from Hungary; and
         WHEREAS, Sharing in the victory at this fun and informative
  event were the four members of the ESI team, Max Whitley, Richard
  Knoll, Marlene Steward, and F. M. Gilbert, and they may indeed take
  pride in their comprehensive knowledge of their community and of
  the man who shares his name with the city; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Max Whitley, Richard Knoll,
  Marlene Steward, and F. M. Gilbert of Entertainment Series of
  Irving for winning the 2009 "Irving Trivia--the City and the Man"
  contest and extend to the team's members sincere best wishes for
  continued happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
