R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Members of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in
  Galveston are celebrating the 120th anniversary of their church's
  founding on May 17, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, Since its organization by 16 charter members in
  1889, the congregation of Macedonia has benefited from the able
  leadership of many outstanding clergymen; today, that tradition of
  dedicated pastoral service is continued by the Reverend A. Wilford
  Colbert, who assumed the pulpit of this historic church in 1993; and
         WHEREAS, United by their shared faith and inspired by the
  achievements of members who have gone before, the congregants of
  Macedonia carry out a wide range of ministries that offer
  fellowship, encourage spiritual growth, and provide opportunities
  for assisting those in need; and
         WHEREAS, Macedonia also engages in the wider community in a
  number of ways, such as working to foster intercultural
  understanding, hosting gatherings related to local concerns,
  offering health screenings, and participating in voter
  registration drives; in addition, the church provides space for
  community functions and supports the Ambassadors Preparatory
  Academy charter school, which Reverend Colbert was instrumental in
  launching; and
         WHEREAS, Macedonia's sanctuary has stood at the corner of
  29th Street and Avenue M-1/2 since before the turn of the 20th
  century; the first permanent church building on that site was
  destroyed by the Galveston Storm of 1900, and the sanctuary that
  replaced it was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008; this
  resilient congregation has recently completed repairs to their
  facilities, however, and purchased several new properties to
  facilitate future growth; and
         WHEREAS, For well over a century, countless Galveston
  residents have looked to Macedonia for spiritual support and
  guidance, and it is a privilege to join in honoring the church at
  this special time in its rich history; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 120th anniversary of Macedonia
  Missionary Baptist Church and extend to its pastor and congregation
  sincere best wishes for a joyous and memorable celebration; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
