| WHEREAS, Jack Hays of West Columbia was inducted into the | ||
| Ronnie Bell Hall of Honor by the Greater Houston Football Coaches | ||
| Association on May 6, 2009; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Hays began his long involvement in sports as a | ||
| quarterback at Sunset High School in Dallas, which he carried to the | ||
| 1950 state championship, and continued to demonstrate excellence on | ||
| the gridiron at North Texas State University; he went on to serve as | ||
| head football coach at El Campo High School for seven years before | ||
| taking the same position at Columbia High School in 1969; and | ||
| WHEREAS, During 18 years of coaching, Mr. Hays compiled an | ||
| impressive record of 130 wins, 60 losses, and 8 ties; moreover, he | ||
| earned seven district championships and 15 playoff games, and he | ||
| advanced to the state finals twice; with the Columbia Roughnecks | ||
| alone, his record was 81-37-5, and he is credited with helping | ||
| establish them as one of the premier teams in Class 3A; along with | ||
| his assistants, Charlie Forehand, Ed Derrich, and Charlie Brand, he | ||
| was selected to coach the South team in the 1974 Texas High School | ||
| Coaches Association All Star game at the Astrodome, and he led the | ||
| team to victory; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Hays further contributed to his profession as a | ||
| member of the THSCA board, which he served as president in 1975; his | ||
| many honors include being twice named the Brazoria County Coach of | ||
| the Year and being inducted into the THSCA Hall of Honor and the | ||
| Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Following his departure from coaching, Mr. Hays | ||
| remained in West Columbia and founded the Hays Insurance Agency | ||
| with his wife, Ellen; he gives back to the community as an active | ||
| member of the West Columbia Rotary Club and the Columbia United | ||
| Methodist Church, and he previously served as a founding director | ||
| of the local chapter of the Gulf Coast Conservation Association and | ||
| as a member of the board of the Brazoria County Library; he was | ||
| named Business Leader of the Year 1999 by the Brazoria County | ||
| Partnership; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Jack Hays was known throughout his coaching career | ||
| for his integrity, dependability, and strong principles, and he may | ||
| indeed reflect with pride on his many noteworthy achievements; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby congratulate Jack Hays on his induction into the | ||
| Ronnie Bell Hall of Honor by the Greater Houston Football Coaches | ||
| Association and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued | ||
| happiness and success; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Mr. Hays as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
| House of Representatives. | ||
