R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The family and friends of United States Army
  Sergeant Conrad Alvarez of Big Spring have suffered a grievous loss
  with the passing of this brave soldier in Iraq on February 20, 2008,
  at the age of 22; and
         WHEREAS, Sergeant Alvarez was assigned to A Company, 1st
  Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st
  Airborne Division (Air Assault), and based at Fort Campbell; he was
  serving his second tour of duty in Iraq when he was mortally
  wounded, together with two fellow soldiers, in Baghdad; and
         WHEREAS, Born and raised in Roscoe, Conrad Alvarez attended
  Roscoe High School and played on the Plowboys football team, which
  benefited from his outstanding skill as a punt returner; he
  graduated from high school in Hobbs in November 2003 and joined the
  army in March 2005; and
         WHEREAS, Sergeant Alvarez showed exceptional aptitude in the
  military, and he received rapid promotion; he took great pride in
  serving his country and was considering becoming an army recruiter;
  and
         WHEREAS, From the time he was a youth, Conrad Alvarez looked
  out for other people; beloved for his ready smile and cheerful,
  outgoing nature, he won the deep affection of a host of friends; and
         WHEREAS, The awards conferred on Sergeant Alvarez include the
  Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq
  Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service
  Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Weapons Qualification, M4,
  expert; and
         WHEREAS, Through his unfaltering devotion to duty, honor, and
  this country, Sergeant Alvarez embodied the highest ideals of the
  United States armed forces, and the blessing of his life will be
  forever cherished by those who were privileged to share in his love
  and friendship; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Sergeant Conrad
  Alvarez and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
  to his wife, Maira Alvarez; to his son, Kristian Thomas Alvarez; to
  his daughters, Celeste and Alyssa Alvarez; to his mother and
  stepfather, Belinda and Pete Garcia; to his father, Arthur Alvarez;
  to his sister and brother, Christina Menchaca and Timothy Alcala;
  and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sergeant
  Conrad Alvarez.
