R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Maggie and Ennis Williams of the Old Central
  Cultural Center in Galveston are helping their fellow Texans to
  commemorate Juneteenth, the historic date that signifies the end of
  slavery in Texas; and
         WHEREAS, Located in the first African American high school in
  Texas, the Old Central Cultural Center was founded to provide
  cultural enrichment to tourists and residents, to preserve
  artifacts of black culture, and to serve local citizens as a
  community center; Mr. Williams serves as president of the center's
  board of directors, while Mrs. Williams also serves on the board as
  a valued member; and
         WHEREAS, To help increase awareness of the significance of
  Juneteenth in the history of our state, Mr. and Mrs. Williams serve
  as co-chairs of the Al Edwards Juneteenth Banquet, which draws
  nearly 400 people and is celebrating its 13th year in 2009; they
  have also given generously of their time to help coordinate the
  annual Emancipation Proclamation Reading and Prayer Breakfast, and
  they were instrumental in securing local approval of the Juneteenth
  monument at the historic Ashton Villa; and
         WHEREAS, Respected members of their community, Mr. and Mrs.
  Williams are retired from their careers with the Galveston
  Independent School District, where he was employed as an
  administrator and she was employed as an educator; they both attend
  Avenue L Baptist Church, one of the oldest African American
  churches in Texas; and
         WHEREAS, Juneteenth represents a turning point in the history
  of the Lone Star State, and Mr. and Mrs. Williams indeed merit
  special recognition for their hard work and dedication in helping
  to organize events to commemorate this important day; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commend Maggie and Ennis Williams for their
  efforts to commemorate Juneteenth in Galveston and extend to
  Mr. and Mrs. Williams sincere best wishes for continued success
  with their important work; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Williams as an expression of high regard
  by the Texas House of Representatives.
