R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Maria Elena Cardenas served Val Verde County as
  county clerk for two decades, and her exceptional record of
  achievement indeed merits special recognition; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Del Rio to Tomas and Antonia Aguirre, the
  former Maria Aguirre graduated from San Felipe High School and
  attended business college in San Antonio; she married Jose Luis
  Cardenas in 1963, and the couple today have five children, Jose,
  Bill, Oneida, Joelda, and Sobeida, as well as seven grandchildren;
  and
         WHEREAS, A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Cardenas dedicated
  herself to raising her family for nearly a decade while her children
  were young; she was hired as a Val Verde County deputy clerk in 1972
  and held that job for five years before moving with her husband to
  San Antonio; and
         WHEREAS, When the family returned to Del Rio in 1979,
  Mrs. Cardenas was rehired as a deputy clerk and later became chief
  deputy; in 1986, she was urged by retiring county clerk Mildred
  Hildreth to run for office and was elected unopposed in that year's
  election; Mrs. Cardenas went on to serve three additional terms as
  county clerk, doing an outstanding job of managing the official
  records, administering elections, and fulfilling the other duties
  of the office, until her retirement on December 31, 2006; and
         WHEREAS, A diligent and professional public servant, Maria
  Cardenas contributed greatly to the government operations of Val
  Verde County, and she may take justifiable pride in the excellent
  service she provided to area Texans; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby honor Maria Elena Cardenas for her outstanding
  work as the county clerk for Val Verde County and extend to her
  sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mrs. Cardenas as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
