R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The tradition of family-owned and -operated |
|
|
businesses is strong in the Lone Star State, and The New York Store |
|
|
of Hebbronville is contributing to that proud heritage by |
|
|
celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2009; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Established in 1909 by Sixto Garcia, The New York |
|
|
Store served as a much-needed general store for Hebbronville and |
|
|
Jim Hogg County on its opening, providing its customers with a wide |
|
|
variety of merchandise, including groceries, hardware, and |
|
|
agricultural supplies and equipment; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The store likewise aided the community by allowing |
|
|
area citizens to purchase items on credit and offering wholesale |
|
|
prices to ranchers and farmers buying in large quantities; the |
|
|
store was a welcome addition to the town, offering customers |
|
|
safeguards for their wagons and a resting place for their horses; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Today, The New York Store continues to thrive by |
|
|
stocking a variety of western wear, specializing in clothing and |
|
|
accessories that preserve the vaquero tradition; for the past 15 |
|
|
years, the store has been owned and operated by Mr. Garcia's |
|
|
granddaughter, Marguerita Ellison, who took over the business in |
|
|
1994 from her parents, Blas and Herlinda Salinas; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, By carrying on her family's tradition of serving the |
|
|
community, Mrs. Ellison has ensured that The New York Store |
|
|
continues to contribute to the cultural and economic life of Jim |
|
|
Hogg County, while preserving a vital part of the town's rich |
|
|
history; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of The New York Store |
|
|
in Hebbronville and extend to Marguerita Ellison and her staff |
|
|
sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it |
|
|
further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the store as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
