R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The family and friends of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant |
|
Gary Wayne Jeffries of Roscoe suffered an immeasurable loss with |
|
his death on January 28, 2008, at the age of 37, while serving in |
|
Iraq; and |
|
WHEREAS, Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry |
|
Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, out of |
|
Fort Carson, Colorado, Staff Sergeant Jeffries was killed by an |
|
improvised explosive device in Mosul; and |
|
WHEREAS, Gary Jeffries graduated from Roscoe High School in |
|
1990, and he joined the Army in 1997; he served four tours of duty |
|
overseas, including one deployment in Korea and three deployments |
|
in Iraq; he looked out for the other soldiers in his unit, who |
|
affectionately called him "Grandpa Six"; and |
|
WHEREAS, For his distinguished service, Staff Sergeant |
|
Jeffries earned the Army Commendation Medal with valor device, two |
|
Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, three Army |
|
Good Conduct Medals, and the National Defense Service Medal; and |
|
WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and |
|
women whose love of country leads them to serve in the military, and |
|
the passage of time can never diminish the profound debt that |
|
Americans owe Staff Sergeant Jeffries for his sacrifice; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Staff Sergeant Gary |
|
Wayne Jeffries and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |
|
family: to his mother, Fern Taylor; to his children, Zachary and |
|
Sierra; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gary Wayne |
|
Jeffries. |
