R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the death of U.S. |
|
|
Army Specialist Jeffrey F. Nichols of Burnet County, who was killed |
|
|
in the line of duty in Iraq on May 1, 2008, at the age of 21; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Specialist Nichols died of wounds sustained when his |
|
|
vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to service, Jeffrey |
|
|
Nichols joined the army in September 2005 and received his basic and |
|
|
advanced individual training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Specialist Nichols was assigned to Fort Polk in |
|
|
December 2005, and he went on to distinguish himself as a field |
|
|
artilleryman with the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th |
|
|
Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry); and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This brave and loyal soldier was decorated with the |
|
|
Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Iraq |
|
|
Campaign Medal; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and |
|
|
women whose love for their country inspires them to take up military |
|
|
service, yet the tragic death of this dedicated young man is a |
|
|
sobering reminder of the cost of war; Specialist Nichols embodied |
|
|
the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and those who knew and |
|
|
loved him will forever carry him close in their hearts; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist |
|
|
Jeffrey F. Nichols and extend sincere condolences to his wife, |
|
|
Kasey; to his son, Sonny; to his mother, Cathy Miears; to his |
|
|
sisters, Elizabeth Garcia, Kara Nichols, and Rheadene Miears; to |
|
|
his father, Patrick Kearns; to his grandfather, Harold Dedmon; to |
|
|
his mother-in-law, Dorothy Casella; to his father-in-law, Dennis |
|
|
Griggs; to his uncles, Skip, Phil, and Gary Dedmon; to his nephew |
|
|
and niece, Andrew and Channing Garcia; and to his other loved ones; |
|
|
and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Specialist |
|
|
Jeffrey F. Nichols. |
