R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the death of U.S.
  Army Specialist Jeffrey F. Nichols of Burnet County, who was killed
  in the line of duty in Iraq on May 1, 2008, at the age of 21; and
         WHEREAS, Specialist Nichols died of wounds sustained when his
  vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad;
  and
         WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to service, Jeffrey
  Nichols joined the army in September 2005 and received his basic and
  advanced individual training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and
         WHEREAS, Specialist Nichols was assigned to Fort Polk in
  December 2005, and he went on to distinguish himself as a field
  artilleryman with the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th
  Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry); and
         WHEREAS, This brave and loyal soldier was decorated with the
  Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Iraq
  Campaign Medal; and
         WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and
  women whose love for their country inspires them to take up military
  service, yet the tragic death of this dedicated young man is a
  sobering reminder of the cost of war; Specialist Nichols embodied
  the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and those who knew and
  loved him will forever carry him close in their hearts; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist
  Jeffrey F. Nichols and extend sincere condolences to his wife,
  Kasey; to his son, Sonny; to his mother, Cathy Miears; to his
  sisters, Elizabeth Garcia, Kara Nichols, and Rheadene Miears; to
  his father, Patrick Kearns; to his grandfather, Harold Dedmon; to
  his mother-in-law, Dorothy Casella; to his father-in-law, Dennis
  Griggs; to his uncles, Skip, Phil, and Gary Dedmon; to his nephew
  and niece, Andrew and Channing Garcia; and to his other loved ones;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Specialist
  Jeffrey F. Nichols.
