R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the sorrow felt at
  the loss of U.S. Marine Sergeant Matthew E. Mendoza of San Antonio,
  who died on June 20, 2008, at the age of 24; and
         WHEREAS, Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment,
  1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Sergeant Mendoza
  was based at Twentynine Palms, California; he was killed while
  bravely serving his country in Afghanistan; and
         WHEREAS, Born on April 22, 1984, to Raul and Elizabeth
  Mendoza, Matthew Mendoza graduated from Highlands High School,
  where he was a linebacker and running back for the football team; he
  grew up playing the sport and as an adult enjoyed coaching with the
  local Pop Warner league; in 2004, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine
  Corps, becoming the third generation in his family to serve in the
  military; in addition to his distinguished service in Afghanistan,
  he completed two tours of duty in Iraq; and
         WHEREAS, This outstanding young Texan was known for his
  devotion to his family and his country; honest and easygoing, he
  brought much joy into the lives of his family and friends; and
         WHEREAS, Sergeant Mendoza exemplified the highest ideals of
  the United States armed forces and inspired others with his
  leadership and courage; although he is deeply missed, he will
  forever be treasured in the hearts of his loved ones; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Marine Sergeant
  Matthew E. Mendoza and extend sincere sympathy to his wife,
  Valerie; to his son, Matthew I. Mendoza; to his parents, Raul and
  Elizabeth Mendoza; to his brother, Timothy Mendoza; to his niece,
  Brooke Leanne Mendoza; and to his other relatives and many friends;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of U.S. Marine
  Sergeant Matthew E. Mendoza.
