R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of John
  Ernest Phillips of Dallas, who passed away on March 20, 2009, at the
  age of 69; and
         WHEREAS, Born on a farm near Italy, Texas, on April 10, 1939,
  John Phillips relocated to Levelland as a youth, and he went on to
  graduate from Hardin-Simmons University and later Baylor Law
  School; in addition, he earned a master's degree from the Dedman
  School of Law at Southern Methodist University, and he completed
  the Ranch Management Program at Texas Christian University;
  answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Phillips joined the United
  States Army, and he was commissioned as a first lieutenant and
  awarded the Army Commendation Medal; and
         WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan became a trial lawyer, working
  on numerous cases and serving as the president of the Dallas
  Association of Defense Lawyers; for a decade, he led the General
  Litigation Division at Strasburger and Price, LLP, in Dallas, and
  after 33 years with the firm, he retired as a senior partner in
  2001; on his retirement, Mr. Phillips continued raising Aberdeen
  Angus cattle in Italy; he was also active in his community of faith,
  and he was a deacon at Central Baptist Church of Italy and at Park
  Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, where he was a member of the Bob
  and Ruth Glaze Sunday School class for more than 20 years; and
         WHEREAS, John Phillips was a dedicated professional and a
  caring citizen, and although he will be deeply missed, he will
  forever be remembered with great admiration and affection by those
  who were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Ernest
  Phillips and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
  to his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara; to his son, John Edd, and
  his wife, Lisa; to his daughter, Jan; to his grandson, Walter; to
  his mother, Ernestine Phillips; to his brother, Joe Don Phillips,
  and his sister, Tina Swenson; and to his other relatives and
  friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Ernest
  Phillips.
