R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of John |
|
Ernest Phillips of Dallas, who passed away on March 20, 2009, at the |
|
age of 69; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on a farm near Italy, Texas, on April 10, 1939, |
|
John Phillips relocated to Levelland as a youth, and he went on to |
|
graduate from Hardin-Simmons University and later Baylor Law |
|
School; in addition, he earned a master's degree from the Dedman |
|
School of Law at Southern Methodist University, and he completed |
|
the Ranch Management Program at Texas Christian University; |
|
answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Phillips joined the United |
|
States Army, and he was commissioned as a first lieutenant and |
|
awarded the Army Commendation Medal; and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan became a trial lawyer, working |
|
on numerous cases and serving as the president of the Dallas |
|
Association of Defense Lawyers; for a decade, he led the General |
|
Litigation Division at Strasburger and Price, LLP, in Dallas, and |
|
after 33 years with the firm, he retired as a senior partner in |
|
2001; on his retirement, Mr. Phillips continued raising Aberdeen |
|
Angus cattle in Italy; he was also active in his community of faith, |
|
and he was a deacon at Central Baptist Church of Italy and at Park |
|
Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, where he was a member of the Bob |
|
and Ruth Glaze Sunday School class for more than 20 years; and |
|
WHEREAS, John Phillips was a dedicated professional and a |
|
caring citizen, and although he will be deeply missed, he will |
|
forever be remembered with great admiration and affection by those |
|
who were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Ernest |
|
Phillips and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: |
|
to his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara; to his son, John Edd, and |
|
his wife, Lisa; to his daughter, Jan; to his grandson, Walter; to |
|
his mother, Ernestine Phillips; to his brother, Joe Don Phillips, |
|
and his sister, Tina Swenson; and to his other relatives and |
|
friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Ernest |
|
Phillips. |
