R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Ed Smith retired from Macy's on April 30, 2009,
  bringing a close to his notable career as an executive for the
  department store chain; and
         WHEREAS, A Michigan native, Mr. Smith attended El Camino
  College and California State University, Dominguez Hills, and
  served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War; he began his
  career in 1972 as credit promotion manager for Foley's Department
  Store, which later became part of Macy's; he held various positions
  as he rose through the ranks and retired as vice president of public
  relations, special events, community affairs, and visitor services
  for the Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana region; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has also been very active in community
  endeavors, serving on the boards of directors for several nonprofit
  agencies, chairing numerous fund-raising events, and receiving
  multiple accolades for his work; among the organizations to benefit
  from his input are the AIDS Foundation Houston, the Alley Theatre,
  BRASS, Career & Recovery Resources, Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos,
  Crisis Intervention of Houston, Houston Downtown Alliance, the Gulf
  Coast Workforce Board, the Houston Area Urban League, Houston
  OASIS, Ronald McDonald House, SEARCH, Stages Repertory Theatre,
  Teach For America, and the University of Houston Graduate School of
  Social Work, among others; in his leisure time, Mr. Smith enjoys
  downhill skiing, travel, and reading; and
         WHEREAS, Looking to pursue new business opportunities, he has
  formed Ed Smith & Associates, LLC, and plans to devote himself to
  this venture in the years ahead; for more than 3-1/2 decades, Mr.
  Smith has worked diligently in behalf of his company and his
  community, and he may indeed reflect with pride on a career well
  spent as he embarks on an exciting new chapter in his life; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Ed Smith on the occasion of his
  retirement from Macy's and extend to him sincere best wishes for
  continued success and happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
