R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Friends and family were greatly saddened by the loss |
|
of Hobbs Williams of Hawkins, who passed away on April 22, 2009, at |
|
the age of 85; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on September 2, 1923, in Sulphur Springs, Hobbs |
|
Williams was the son of Byron and Lorena Williams; he attended The |
|
University of Texas on a baseball scholarship and had the |
|
opportunity to play in the inaugural College World Series, where he |
|
helped his team by hitting a grand-slam home run; his college |
|
studies were interrupted by service as a bombardier in the U.S. Army |
|
Air Forces during World War II, but he returned to UT to earn a |
|
bachelor's degree in 1948 and a master's degree in education the |
|
following year; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Williams married the former Doris Carolyn Dietze |
|
in 1947, and the couple later moved to Kerens; in 1956, they both |
|
accepted teaching positions in the Grand Prairie Independent School |
|
District; Mr. Williams went on to spend 30 years with the district, |
|
retiring as its superintendent in 1986; his exceptional career was |
|
recognized by Grand Prairie ISD in 2008, when Hobbs Williams |
|
Elementary was named in his honor; and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan moved to Hawkins with his wife |
|
shortly after his retirement, and he became an active member of |
|
First United Methodist Church, the Hawkins Chamber of Commerce, the |
|
Veterans Memorial Association, and the Lake Hawkins Homeowners |
|
Association; and |
|
WHEREAS, Hobbs Williams was a man of great skill and |
|
dedication, and his legacy of service to his country, to his family, |
|
and to students in the Grand Prairie community will long resonate |
|
with those who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Hobbs Williams and |
|
extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, |
|
Doris Carolyn Williams; to his children, Byron Leroy Williams and |
|
Linda Crabtree and her husband, Bill; and to his other relatives and |
|
friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Hobbs |
|
Williams. |
