R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Through their participation in the Speak Up! Speak |
|
|
Out! program, students at Akins High School, Garza High School, and |
|
|
LBJ High School in Austin are discovering the many ways they can |
|
|
make a difference in their communities; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, An initiative of the Annette Strauss Institute for |
|
|
Civic Participation at The University of Texas at Austin, Speak Up! |
|
|
Speak Out! is an innovative civic education program that allows |
|
|
high school students to identify community problems and develop |
|
|
creative and viable solutions; working in teams, the students |
|
|
present their findings to area leaders at the annual spring civics |
|
|
fair, which was held this year on May 21, 2009, on the UT-Austin |
|
|
campus; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Teachers Linda O'Neal of Akins High, Martha Cason of |
|
|
Garza High, and Mark Cunningham of LBJ High have demonstrated |
|
|
outstanding leadership in their work with the Speak Up! Speak Out! |
|
|
programs at their schools; these educators, in cooperation with |
|
|
staff, mentors, and volunteer judges, play an important role in |
|
|
encouraging our youth to take an interest in civic matters; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A democratic form of government depends on the |
|
|
informed participation of its people, and the skills and knowledge |
|
|
gained through Speak Up! Speak Out! are preparing many young Texans |
|
|
to become engaged, productive citizens of the Lone Star State; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby recognize the students and teachers at Akins, |
|
|
Garza, and LBJ High Schools who participated in Speak Up! Speak Out! |
|
|
and commend all those involved in this noteworthy program for their |
|
|
contributions; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the schools and for the Annette Strauss Institute for |
|
|
Civic Participation as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
