R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Virginia Mayers retired from the South Texas |
|
Workforce Development Board in 2007, drawing to a close a notable |
|
career that spanned more than four decades; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of Laredo, Virginia Mayers graduated from |
|
Martin High School and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in |
|
vocational home economics education from Texas Woman's University |
|
in 1967 and a master's degree in secondary education from Laredo |
|
State University in 1979; after holding positions with Southwestern |
|
Bell Telephone Company and The Texas A&M University System, Ms. |
|
Mayers served as a food service production and management |
|
instructor for the Laredo Independent School District; in 1987, she |
|
became the director of operations for the South Texas Private |
|
Industry Council, where she assisted in the areas of human |
|
resources, development, procedures, and public relations; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Mayers later joined Laredo Community College and |
|
served from 1994 to 2002 as director of continuing education and |
|
department chair; she spent the last five years of her career as |
|
deputy director for workforce development with the South Texas |
|
Workforce Development Board; and |
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed professional maintained affiliations |
|
with the state and national chapters of both the Association of |
|
Family and Consumer Sciences and the Extension Association of |
|
Family and Consumer Sciences, from which she received the |
|
Distinguished Service Award; she was also recognized with a |
|
Superior Service Award from Texas AgriLife Extension Service and |
|
was named a delegate to the White House Conference on Families; |
|
moreover, she was active in her community as a member of numerous |
|
service groups, including the City of Laredo Youth Steering |
|
Committee, the South Texas Development Council board, the Webb |
|
County Farm Bureau, the Texas State Nutrition Council, and the Webb |
|
County 4-H Adult Leaders Association, which she served as |
|
president; and |
|
WHEREAS, With an unwavering dedication to family services and |
|
continuing education, Ms. Mayers worked to improve the lives of |
|
countless Texans, and she may indeed reflect with great pride on a |
|
career well spent; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Virginia Mayers on her |
|
professional achievements and extend to her sincere best wishes for |
|
continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Mayers as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
