R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Through their participation in the Speak Up! Speak |
|
Out! program, students at Horizon High School in El Paso are |
|
discovering the many ways they can make a difference in their |
|
community; and |
|
WHEREAS, An initiative of the Annette Strauss Institute for |
|
Civic Participation at The University of Texas at Austin, Speak Up! |
|
Speak Out! is an innovative civic education program that allows |
|
high school students to identify community problems and develop |
|
creative and viable solutions; working in teams, the students |
|
present their findings to area leaders at the annual spring civics |
|
fair, which was held this year on May 21, 2009, on the UT-Austin |
|
campus; and |
|
WHEREAS, Teacher Andrea Figueroa has demonstrated |
|
outstanding leadership in her work with the Speak Up! Speak Out! |
|
program at Horizon High; in cooperation with the staff, mentors, |
|
and volunteer judges who assist with the program, this esteemed |
|
educator is playing an admirable role in encouraging our youth to |
|
take an interest in civic matters; and |
|
WHEREAS, A democratic form of government depends on the |
|
informed participation of its people, and the skills and knowledge |
|
gained through Speak Up! Speak Out! are preparing many young Texans |
|
to become engaged, productive citizens of the Lone Star State; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize the Speak Up! Speak Out! program and |
|
its participants at Horizon High School and commend all those |
|
involved in this noteworthy initiative for their contributions; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the school and for the Annette Strauss Institute for |
|
Civic Participation as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
