R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The 60th birthday of a distinguished Texan is indeed
  cause for celebration, and Jim Beckett of Dallas reached this
  memorable milestone on May 10, 2009; and
         WHEREAS, A renowned expert in sports card values, Mr. Beckett
  earned his doctorate in statistics from Southern Methodist
  University in 1975, joined Bowling Green University as an associate
  professor, and in 1980 became vice president of a Dallas consulting
  firm; and
         WHEREAS, While he was teaching at Bowling Green, Mr.
  Beckett's passion for sports and collectibles led him to produce a
  baseball card price guide out of a desire to bring some order to the
  disorganized baseball card business; he soon began printing annual
  price guides, and in November 1984 he published 10,000 copies of the
  first edition of Beckett Baseball Card Monthly; this periodical
  quickly became a trusted reference source for collectors, and
  within a few years Mr. Beckett had turned his hobby into the
  successful Beckett Publications; he authored more than 50
  sports-related books, including annual price guides in several
  fields, and served as CEO of the company until selling it in January
  2005; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Beckett is now CEO of Beckett Interests Inc. and
  serves on the boards of DRG and Liquid Motors; moreover, he serves
  as a member of the boards of Grad Resources and the West Dallas
  Initiative and of the DFW Metroplex Advisory Board of the Salvation
  Army; his numerous affiliations include the American Statistical
  Association, the Benefactors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame,
  and the Society for American Baseball Research; a valued member of
  Stonebriar Community Church and of the Dallas Theological Seminary
  Presidents Council, he gives generously of his time and talents to
  many local, national, and international ministries and nonprofit
  organizations; in his leisure time, he enjoys golfing, antiques,
  fitness, fine dining, musicals, reading, and traveling; and
         WHEREAS, Jim Beckett is respected and admired for his
  professional accomplishments and his contributions to the
  community, and it is a pleasure to join his family and friends in
  commemorating the 60th anniversary of his birth; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Jim Beckett on the occasion of his
  60th birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
  happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Beckett as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
