R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Betty Dodson played an instrumental role in the |
|
founding of Project Redirection, which has been a great benefit to |
|
the El Paso community; and |
|
WHEREAS, A lifelong advocate of education, Ms. Dodson |
|
graduated from the University of South Dakota and went on to earn a |
|
master's degree when she was in her 50s; she taught at Putnam |
|
Elementary School, Morehead Middle School, and Coronado High |
|
School, and her experiences home-schooling her children made her an |
|
able director of the local Homebound Program; and |
|
WHEREAS, When Ms. Dodson was asked by the El Paso Independent |
|
School District to develop a program to teach school-age parents, |
|
she set up Project Redirection with a grant from the Ford |
|
Foundation; the program operated out of an old barracks near |
|
Beaumont Army Medical Center before moving in 1984 to the Young |
|
Women's Christian Association, where it has thrived ever since; and |
|
WHEREAS, The recipient of many well-deserved accolades, this |
|
visionary Texan was named Woman of the Year in Education by the El |
|
Paso Women's Political Caucus, a Woman of Distinction by the |
|
Soroptimist Club, and First Lady of El Paso by the El Paso Council |
|
of Beta Sigma Phi, and she was inducted into the El Paso Women's |
|
Hall of Fame; and |
|
WHEREAS, Betty Dodson channeled a love for learning and a |
|
passion for teaching into Project Redirection, and this program has |
|
provided immeasurable benefit to countless El Paso teenagers and to |
|
the community at large; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor the life of Betty Dodson for her crucial |
|
role in founding Project Redirection and extend to all those |
|
currently involved with the program sincere best wishes for |
|
continued success. |
