R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, September 2010 marks the bicentennial of the start |
|
of the Mexican revolution by Catholic priest and national hero |
|
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla; and |
|
WHEREAS, On September 16, 1810, Father Hidalgo touched off |
|
the long-simmering rebellion when he ordered the arrest of native |
|
Spaniards in the town of Dolores and encouraged the indigenous |
|
peoples of Mexico to overthrow the brutal Spanish regime; the |
|
passionate speech the priest delivered on that day, the Grito de |
|
Dolores, declaring "death to bad government," has since become |
|
known as the "cry for Mexican independence"; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, Father Hidalgo is revered as the father of |
|
Mexican independence, and his story continues to inspire oppressed |
|
people of all nationalities; the legacy of this remarkable man and |
|
his message of solidarity evoke heartfelt feelings of pride and |
|
patriotism among those who celebrate this momentous event; and |
|
WHEREAS, The 200th anniversary of the beginning of the |
|
Mexican War for Independence represents a fitting opportunity to |
|
celebrate the heroism of Father Hidalgo and his revolutionaries, |
|
and the defiant, yet hopeful cry of "Mexicanos, Viva Mexico" is |
|
uttered in proud tribute to their memory; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the bicentennial in 2010 of Diez y |
|
Seiz de Septiembre and congratulate the citizens of Mexico on this |
|
historic milestone; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the president of Mexico and other officials of the |
|
Mexican government as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
