R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The 2009 Chicano Activist Convention is taking place
  August 21 through 23, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency and Belmont Hotels
  in Dallas; and
         WHEREAS, Focusing on the theme "40 Years of Struggle (At
  Least!)," the convention celebrates the legacy of the Chicano
  movement of the late 1960s and 1970s; and
         WHEREAS, During that dynamic period, Mexican American
  activists and a broad coalition of supporters joined together to
  bring about significant social and political change in the United
  States; and
         WHEREAS, The Chicano movement addressed urgent issues that
  included political representation, voting rights, educational
  reform, and the working conditions of farm laborers; by striving to
  achieve progress in those important areas, participants brought our
  nation closer to its ideals regarding civil rights and social
  justice and inspired a flowering of Latino culture that continues
  to the present; and
         WHEREAS, Though decades have passed since the height of the
  movement, its influence is still strongly felt in American life,
  and the experiences and achievements of the men and women who shaped
  that vibrant era are indeed deserving of recognition and
  celebration; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Chicano Activist
  Convention and extend to the organizers and participants sincere
  best wishes for a productive and memorable gathering.
