| WHEREAS, The 2009 Chicano Activist Convention is taking place | ||
| August 21 through 23, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency and Belmont Hotels | ||
| in Dallas; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Focusing on the theme "40 Years of Struggle (At | ||
| Least!)," the convention celebrates the legacy of the Chicano | ||
| movement of the late 1960s and 1970s; and | ||
| WHEREAS, During that dynamic period, Mexican American | ||
| activists and a broad coalition of supporters joined together to | ||
| bring about significant social and political change in the United | ||
| States; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The Chicano movement addressed urgent issues that | ||
| included political representation, voting rights, educational | ||
| reform, and the working conditions of farm laborers; by striving to | ||
| achieve progress in those important areas, participants brought our | ||
| nation closer to its ideals regarding civil rights and social | ||
| justice and inspired a flowering of Latino culture that continues | ||
| to the present; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Though decades have passed since the height of the | ||
| movement, its influence is still strongly felt in American life, | ||
| and the experiences and achievements of the men and women who shaped | ||
| that vibrant era are indeed deserving of recognition and | ||
| celebration; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Chicano Activist | ||
| Convention and extend to the organizers and participants sincere | ||
| best wishes for a productive and memorable gathering. | ||
