R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The 2009 Chicano Activist Convention is taking place |
|
August 21 through 23, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency and Belmont Hotels |
|
in Dallas; and |
|
WHEREAS, Focusing on the theme "40 Years of Struggle (At |
|
Least!)," the convention celebrates the legacy of the Chicano |
|
movement of the late 1960s and 1970s; and |
|
WHEREAS, During that dynamic period, Mexican American |
|
activists and a broad coalition of supporters joined together to |
|
bring about significant social and political change in the United |
|
States; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Chicano movement addressed urgent issues that |
|
included political representation, voting rights, educational |
|
reform, and the working conditions of farm laborers; by striving to |
|
achieve progress in those important areas, participants brought our |
|
nation closer to its ideals regarding civil rights and social |
|
justice and inspired a flowering of Latino culture that continues |
|
to the present; and |
|
WHEREAS, Though decades have passed since the height of the |
|
movement, its influence is still strongly felt in American life, |
|
and the experiences and achievements of the men and women who shaped |
|
that vibrant era are indeed deserving of recognition and |
|
celebration; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 2009 Chicano Activist |
|
Convention and extend to the organizers and participants sincere |
|
best wishes for a productive and memorable gathering. |
