A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to certain directions given to state jail felons at the |
|
|
time of discharge from a state jail felony facility. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 507, Government Code, is |
|
|
amended by adding Section 507.021 to read as follows: |
|
|
Sec. 507.021. DIRECTION AT TIME OF DISCHARGE. (a) The |
|
|
department, at the time of discharge, shall direct a defendant |
|
|
discharged from a facility operated under this chapter to report to |
|
|
the district clerk of the county in which the conviction resulting |
|
|
in the defendant's confinement occurred and to resolve any unpaid |
|
|
court costs, fees, or fines that are owed by the defendant. |
|
|
(b) The department may include the direction described by |
|
|
Subsection (a) in the discharge papers provided to the defendant |
|
|
under Section 501.016. |
|
|
SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
|
|
to the discharge of a defendant on or after the effective date of |
|
|
this Act from a state jail felony facility operated by or under |
|
|
contract with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The |
|
|
discharge of a defendant before the effective date of this Act is |
|
|
governed by the law in effect on the date the defendant was |
|
|
discharged, and the former law remains in effect for that purpose. |
|
|
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
