A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to the administration of immunizations and vaccinations by |
|
therapeutic optometrists. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter H, Chapter 351, Occupations Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 351.3582 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 351.3582. ADMINISTRATION OF IMMUNIZATIONS AND |
|
VACCINATIONS. (a) A therapeutic optometrist that satisfies the |
|
education requirements established by the board under this section |
|
may administer an immunization or vaccination to a person over the |
|
age of 14. |
|
(b) A therapeutic optometrist may not delegate the |
|
authority to administer an immunization or vaccination. |
|
(c) The board shall establish: |
|
(1) minimum education and continuing education |
|
standards for a therapeutic optometrist who administers an |
|
immunization or vaccination. The standards must include Centers |
|
for Disease Control and Prevention training, basic life support |
|
training, and hands-on training in techniques for administering |
|
immunizations and vaccinations; and |
|
(2) reporting requirements designed to notify a |
|
patient's primary care physician of any immunization or vaccination |
|
administered by a therapeutic optometrist. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
