A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to the designation of May 9 as Willie Velasquez Day. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 662, Government Code, is |
|
|
amended by adding Section 662.054 to read as follows: |
|
|
Sec. 662.054. WILLIE VELASQUEZ DAY. (a) The 9th day of May |
|
|
is Willie Velasquez Day in observance of the birthday of William |
|
|
"Willie" Cardenas Velasquez, and in honor of his timeless and |
|
|
invaluable contribution to the civil rights, suffrage, and |
|
|
effective political participation of Mexican Americans in this |
|
|
country, and to the promotion of the principles of representative |
|
|
democracy for all people. |
|
|
(b) Willie Velasquez Day shall be regularly observed by |
|
|
appropriate ceremonies in the public schools and other places to |
|
|
commemorate the birthday of William "Willie" Cardenas Velasquez. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2009. |
