SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Twentieth Century Club in Lubbock on the grand
occasion of its centennial anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The Twentieth Century Club was formally organized in
Lubbock in 1909 within months of the formation of the town; what
began as a literary endeavor increasingly reflected the active
involvement of the founders in all areas of civic affairs and
  community development; and
WHEREAS, Among the club's most notable and lasting legacies
is the library system whose foundation began with the first lending
libraries of members who later formed the Lubbock Library
Association; the club hired a librarian to maintain the collection
and petitioned county commissioners for funding; and
WHEREAS, The Twentieth Century Club actively supported the
establishment of Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech
University, in Lubbock and also began a student loan fund that later
became part of the Paul Whitfield Horn Fellowship program; members
of the club have also worked with the university as professors and
  staff; and
WHEREAS, The influence of the Twentieth Century Club in
Lubbock has been felt far and wide through its affiliation with such
groups as the Federated Women's Club and its support of civic
issues, charities, and literary and art promotion; and
WHEREAS, Its significance is a reflection of the strength of
its individual members who continue to give so generously of their
time, energy, and resources to continue the traditions that began
100 years ago; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 81st Legislature of the State of Texas
hereby commend the members of the Twentieth Century Club of Lubbock
for their many worthy endeavors and extend to them best wishes for a
memorable centennial anniversary; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the
Twentieth Century Club to commemorate this historic occasion.
