SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 79
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the American Heart Association in recognizing February 6,
  2009, as National Wear Red Day in Texas; and
         WHEREAS, Diseases of the heart are the nation's leading
  cause of death, and stroke is the third leading cause of death;
  the direct and indirect costs of cardiovascular diseases in the
  United States, including strokes, are estimated at $475 billion
  for the year 2008; and
         WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of some
  455,000 American women each year; more women die of heart
  disease, stroke, or other cardiovascular disease than of the next
  five leading causes of death combined, including all cancers; and
         WHEREAS, Women account for 53 percent of deaths from
  cardiovascular disease and 61 percent of deaths from strokes;
  however, only 21 percent of women regard cardiovascular disease
  as their greatest health risk; and
         WHEREAS, Go Red For Women is the American Heart
  Association's national call to increase awareness about heart
  disease and to inspire women to take charge of their heart
  health; and
         WHEREAS, American Heart Month is observed during the month
  of February, and Wear Red Day on February 6, 2009, is an
  opportunity for all citizens to show their support for women in
  the fight against heart disease; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby designate February 6, 2009, as National Wear
  Red Day in Texas and encourage women and the men who care about
  them to wear red on that day to help increase awareness about
  women's risk for cardiovascular disease and to show support for
  women who are taking charge of their heart health and reducing
  their risks; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  commemoration of National Wear Red Day.
