SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 84
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Joe Olvera, who has been honored with the Chicano
  Lifetime Achievement Award by Del Pueblo Press; and
 
         WHEREAS, A longtime journalist who worked at the El Paso
  Times and the El Paso Herald-Post, Mr. Olvera for many years
  wrote a column in which he took to heart the newspaperman's
  dictum to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Olvera wrote of El Paso life and politics, and
  his references to racism and other social ills along the
  Texas-Mexico border often upset his readers with their
  confrontational sensibilities; he became known for his signature
  closing line "sin fin," which is translated as "without end"; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Olvera is also receiving the Star on the
  Mountain Award, the City of El Paso's highest civilian honor, for
  his years of service to the community; he is truly deserving of
  recognition for his many contributions to journalism and the
  social fabric of the city; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas hereby
  commend Joe Olvera on his commitment to journalistic integrity
  and congratulate him on receiving the Chicano Lifetime
  Achievement Award from Del Pueblo Press; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
