SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 86
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Hughes Butterworth, Jr.
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of El Paso in mourning the loss of business owner and
  philanthropist Hughes Butterworth, Jr., who died December 29,
  2008, at the age of 77; and
 
         WHEREAS, Hughes Butterworth was born in Newport News,
  Virginia, on October 3, 1931; he moved to El Paso when he was a
  child; he graduated from Austin High School and earned a
  bachelor's degree in biological science from Texas Western
  College, now The University of Texas at El Paso; he was
  recognized among the university's distinguished alumni in 1993;
  and
 
         WHEREAS, He founded Lawyers Title of El Paso in 1974 and
  served as chief executive officer and president; he was regarded
  as a pioneer of the land-title industry in El Paso and had trained
  many people now working in the industry; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Butterworth was a dedicated volunteer and
  civic leader who served on the boards of directors of numerous
  organizations, including United Way of El Paso and the El Paso
  Museum of History Foundation; he also served with Hospice of El
  Paso and the American Cancer Society; he was president of the El
  Paso County Historical Society and was recognized as Citizen of
  the Year by the El Paso chapter of the Military Order of the World
  Wars; and
 
         WHEREAS, A lifelong Episcopalian, he lived his Christian
  faith in his daily life and served as an elder and senior warden
  at Saint Francis on the Hill Church; he leaves a legacy of service
  and accomplishments that will be long remembered by all who knew
  him; and
 
         WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
  grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
  for years to come by his family and many friends; now, therefore,
  be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Hughes Butterworth, Jr.: his wife, Sharon Swift
  Butterworth; his children and their spouses, Charles Hughes
  Butterworth, and his wife, Julie; Cynthia Anne Gallagher, and her
  husband, Claiborne; Raymond Dale Espersen, and his wife, Lorna;
  Carolyn ReAnn Gonzalez, and her husband, Steve; and Samuel Hughes
  Butterworth III, and his wife, Jenny; his sister, Elizabeth
  Seckler; his brothers, George Butterworth and John Butterworth;
  and his seven grandchildren; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Hughes Butterworth, Jr.
