SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 139
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the citizens of Waller County in celebrating February 10,
  2009, as Waller County Day at the State Capitol; and
         WHEREAS, Created by the Texas Legislature in 1873 from
  sections of Austin and Grimes Counties, Waller County is named
  for Edwin Waller, a signatory of the Texas Declaration of
  Independence and the City of Austin's first mayor; and
         WHEREAS, Waller County's early settlers were members of
  Stephen F. Austin's original Texas colony; the county played a
  role in the Texas Revolution, serving as the site of an
  encampment for the army of General Sam Houston; and
         WHEREAS, Prior to the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the
  economy of Waller County was driven largely by agriculture, with
  cotton being the foremost crop; a diverse population of African
  Americans, Italians, Irish, Germans, Poles, and Czechs came to
  the region in the late 18th century and early 19th century;
  recently, the county has experienced significant population
  growth; and
         WHEREAS, The citizens of Waller County are rightly proud of
  its distinguished history and the many contributions its people
  have made to the growth and progress of our state; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend a warm welcome to the citizens of
  Waller County who have traveled to the Capitol for this
  commemoration and recognize February 10, 2009, as Waller County
  Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the people of Waller County as an expression of esteem from the
  Texas Senate.
