SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 153
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join citizens across the state in observing February 10, 2009, as
  LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and
         WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day is being organized
  by the Lance Armstrong Foundation to unite people affected by
  cancer, and to raise awareness of the risks presented by this
  deadly disease through education, prevention, and screening and
  early detection efforts; and
         WHEREAS, According to estimates from the Centers for
  Disease Control and Prevention, more than 96,000 cases of cancer
  were diagnosed in Texas in 2008; cancer costs Texans
  approximately $30 billion a year in direct and indirect costs;
  and
         WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death among Texas
  women between the ages of 35 and 74, and 50 percent of Texas men
  will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime; and
         WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day exemplifies the
  spirit and strength of people affected by cancer throughout
  Texas; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby commend the Lance Armstrong Foundation on
  its exceptional efforts to stem the tide of cancer and call upon
  all Texans to observe February 10, 2009, as LIVESTRONG Texas
  Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the foundation as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
