SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 153
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
join citizens across the state in observing February 10, 2009, as |
|
LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day is being organized |
|
by the Lance Armstrong Foundation to unite people affected by |
|
cancer, and to raise awareness of the risks presented by this |
|
deadly disease through education, prevention, and screening and |
|
early detection efforts; and |
|
WHEREAS, According to estimates from the Centers for |
|
Disease Control and Prevention, more than 96,000 cases of cancer |
|
were diagnosed in Texas in 2008; cancer costs Texans |
|
approximately $30 billion a year in direct and indirect costs; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death among Texas |
|
women between the ages of 35 and 74, and 50 percent of Texas men |
|
will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime; and |
|
WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day exemplifies the |
|
spirit and strength of people affected by cancer throughout |
|
Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
Legislature, hereby commend the Lance Armstrong Foundation on |
|
its exceptional efforts to stem the tide of cancer and call upon |
|
all Texans to observe February 10, 2009, as LIVESTRONG Texas |
|
Advocacy Day at the State Capitol; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the foundation as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
