SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 230
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
recognizing the citizens of Fort Stockton on the joyous occasion
of the city's Sesquicentennial Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, This anniversary is an opportunity for the
citizens of Fort Stockton and all Pecos County residents to
celebrate the amenities of their county seat and take pride in
the history of the Trans-Pecos area; and
WHEREAS, Nestled near the heart of West Texas on Interstate
Highway 10, Fort Stockton derives its name from the first
settlement in the area, the United States Army outpost, Fort
Stockton, which was established in 1859 at Comanche Springs, a
favorite rest stop on the Comanche Trail; the fort was named for
United States Senator Robert Field Stockton; and
WHEREAS, In 1868, Peter Gallagher purchased land that
included the Fort Stockton army post and Comanche Springs and
  platted 160 acres for a townsite near the fort named Saint Gall;
in 1871, Pecos County was established by the Texas Legislature
and was formally organized on March 9, 1875, at Saint Gall, which
then became the county seat; on August 13, 1881, the name of the
county seat was officially changed to Fort Stockton; and
WHEREAS, After the military post was abandoned in 1886,
Fort Stockton underwent a temporary decline, only to rise again
quickly as it soon became a successful center for sheep and
cattle ranching and later experienced an economic boom after the
1926 opening of the nearby Yates oil field; and
WHEREAS, Today, Fort Stockton is surrounded by the
extensive ranches and vast irrigated, agricultural farms that
have been successfully maintained over the years; it also bears
the fruits of having been a longtime center for the processing
and distribution of natural gas and oil; the city's numerous
historic sites include Comanche Springs, the remains of the old
fort, and the Annie Riggs Memorial Museum; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
Legislature, hereby join the citizens of Fort Stockton in
celebration of the city's Sesquicentennial Anniversary and
extend appreciation to Pecos County residents for the county's
many contributions to our state; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
honor of Fort Stockton and Pecos County.
