SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 286
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize the Butler Building in League City on the grand
  occasion of its 100th anniversary; and
         WHEREAS, The oldest brick structure on the mainland of
  Galveston County, the Butler Building was built in 1909 by George
  Butler and housed a bank, a grocery store, and a drug store on the
  ground floor and offices for a physician, a dentist, and a real
  estate agent on the second floor; and
         WHEREAS, One of the pioneer settlers of the area, George
  Butler came to the League City area in 1855; he traded in horses
  and cattle and served the region as postmaster and county
  commissioner, and he played an important role in the construction
  of the first bridge connecting Galveston Island to the mainland;
  and
         WHEREAS, Today, the Butler Building houses Butler's
  Courtyard, an award-winning wedding and reception facility that
  has hosted more than 500 weddings and more than 50,000 guests
  since 2003; and
         WHEREAS, The restored building stands in the historic
  district of League City and has been recognized by the League
  City Historical Society with a historic medallion; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas hereby
  commend the citizens of League City for preserving the unique
  architectural and historic legacy of the Butler Building and
  extend to them best wishes for a successful 100th anniversary
  commemoration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
  honor of the 100th anniversary of this historic landmark.
