SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 328
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Village at Incarnate Word in San Antonio on the
occasion of its 20th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The Village at Incarnate Word is a retirement
community founded by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate
  Word; and
WHEREAS, The Sisters of Charity began their work in the San
Antonio area in 1869 when three members of the order arrived to
care for those suffering from a yellow fever epidemic; their
efforts resulted in the opening of Santa Rosa Hospital, the first
  hospital in San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, As the needs of the area grew, the Sisters of
Charity also opened an orphanage and a school, and when the needs
of the elderly became pressing, a home for them was opened in
  1895; and
WHEREAS, After many years of use, the home needed
substantial repairs, and the decision was made to demolish it and
build a new facility that would serve as a retirement home not
just for the Sisters of Charity, but for laypeople as well, and
the Village at Incarnate Word opened its doors on September 8,
  1988; and
WHEREAS, Today, this exemplary facility offers independent
and assisted living, nursing care, and a unit to care for persons
with dementia; the services and care provided at the Village at
Incarnate Word are truly emblematic of the compassionate
heritage of the Sisters of Charity; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
Legislature, hereby commend the Sisters of Charity on their
legacy of service and extend to them congratulations on the 20th
anniversary of the Village at Incarnate Word; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
this outstanding institution as an expression of esteem from the
