SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 369
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize the Honorable Willie Lewis Brown, Jr., of San Francisco
  on the auspicious occasion of his 75th birthday; and
         WHEREAS, A longtime California public servant, Mr. Brown
  is renowned for his charisma, his inimitable personality and
  style, and his generosity of spirit; and
         WHEREAS, Willie Brown was born March 20, 1934, in Mineola,
  Texas; he moved to California as a teenager and attended San
  Francisco State University, where he earned a degree in political
  science; he later received a law degree from the University of
  California Hastings College of Law and became one of the first
  African American attorneys in San Francisco, where he was also
  very active in the civil rights movement; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Brown served in the California State Assembly
  for more than 30 years, including more than 14 years as the
  speaker of that body; in 1996, he became the first African
  American mayor of San Francisco; as mayor, he oversaw a
  significant increase in real estate development, public works,
  city beautification, and other large-scale projects; a
  courageous and compassionate leader, he worked to expand
  services to all city residents and to create an administration
  that reflected the city's diverse population; and
         WHEREAS, In commemoration of his birthday, friends and
  family are gathering in Paris, France, for a three-day
  celebration of his 75 legendary years and of his many civic and
  personal accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby commend the Honorable Willie Brown for his
  decades of devoted public service and extend to him best wishes
  for a memorable 75th birthday; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
