SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 390
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Quentin R. Mease
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of Quentin R. Mease, who
  died February 24, 2009, at the age of 100; and
         WHEREAS, A community leader and civil rights pioneer,
  Quentin R. Mease helped set into motion many of the policies that
  have improved the lives of the citizens of Houston; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Iowa on October 25, 1908, Mr. Mease served
  the nation in World War II as an officer in the United States Air
  Force; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Mease moved to Houston in 1948 to help
  establish the South Central YMCA in the Third Ward, a segregated
  facility in a city that had yet to integrate; he played an
  important role in leading the forces that helped establish equal
  rights for all Houston citizens; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Mease was a member of the original Harris
  County Hospital District governing board, organized in 1966; he
  served as the organization's chair for 19 years, and a Houston
  rehabilitation hospital is named in his honor; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Mease was also active with the Urban League,
  and he authored a memoir entitled On Equal Footing; he was given
  special recognition for his efforts by the National Association
  for the Advancement of Colored People; and
         WHEREAS, A man of courage and compassion who was committed
  to his community, Mr. Mease gave generously to others, and his
  wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those
  who knew him; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Mease was a devoted husband and father, and
  his family and friends will long treasure their cherished
  memories of his life and his many accomplishments; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family and friends of Quentin R. Mease; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Quentin R. Mease.
