SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 398
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Jean Paul Destarac of Tyler, who has been named one of
  the top youth volunteers in Texas for 2009 and a Distinguished
  Finalist by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program;
  and
         WHEREAS, Prudential Financial, in partnership with the
  National Association of Secondary School Principals, presents
  these awards annually to honor young people across the nation for
  outstanding volunteerism and community service; now in its 14th
  year, the program is the country's largest youth recognition
  program based on volunteer service; and
         WHEREAS, A senior at Bishop T.K. Gorman Catholic High
  School, Jean Paul raised $45,000 to pay for chemotherapy for a
  boy in Guatemala who has cancer by selling a compact disc of his
  saxophone playing and by soliciting donations; he has since made
  a second compact disc and plans to donate the proceeds of its
  sales to a Guatemalan hospital to pay for treatment for children
  who cannot afford care; and
         WHEREAS, The success and vitality of our communities, our
  state, and our American society depend in great measure upon the
  dedication of young people like Jean Paul, who use their time and
  talents to serve others; and
         WHEREAS, Jean Paul has shown by his example that he
  personifies the true spirit of giving to the community; he is
  truly deserving of congratulations on receiving this prestigious
  honor; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby commend Jean Paul Destarac for his
  commitment to service and volunteerism in his community and
  extend to him best wishes in all his future endeavors; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
