SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 418
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Fay Sinkin
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Fay Sinkin, who
  died March 4, 2009, at the age of 90; and
         WHEREAS, A civic leader and pioneering environmental
  activist, Fay Sinkin played an important role for more than half
  a century in efforts to improve the City of San Antonio; and
         WHEREAS, A native of New York, Mrs. Sinkin moved to San
  Antonio in 1942 to marry Bill Sinkin; the couple was instrumental
  in organizing HemisFair '68; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Sinkin organized a successful
  movement to desegregate restaurants in San Antonio, and Mrs.
  Sinkin, who had served as president of the League of Women Voters
  in 1947, was instrumental in helping President Lyndon B. Johnson
  find and hire minority applicants to fill embassy positions; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Sinkin broke the gender barrier in many
  organizations over the course of her life; she was the first
  woman to serve on the San Antonio Board of Health, the first woman
  to serve on a Bexar County grand jury, and the first woman to be
  elected by Bexar County to the Edwards Underground Water
  District; and
         WHEREAS, Along with her husband, Mrs. Sinkin organized a
  program called Portrait of the American Woman that promoted
  minority women; she also had a part in organizing an urban
  coalition that enabled students from inner-city schools and
  wealthier districts to interact with one another; and
         WHEREAS, A woman of courage, determination, and unbending
  principle, Mrs. Sinkin gave generously to others, and her wisdom,
  her warmth, and her commitment to equal rights for all will not be
  forgotten by those who knew her; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Fay Sinkin; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Fay Sinkin.
