SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 419
         WHEREAS, The battleship Texas was commissioned in 1914,
  served honorably in World War I and World War II, and has been the
  flagship of the Texas Navy since April 21, 1948; and
 
         WHEREAS, The battleship Texas saw action in the Atlantic
  Ocean, off the North African coast, during the D-Day invasion at
  Normandy, and at Iwo Jima and Okinawa before retiring to a berth
  at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site; and
 
         WHEREAS, The battleship Texas was a ship of many firsts,
  including the first battleship to launch an airplane and the
  first battleship to use radar; and
 
         WHEREAS, The battleship Texas suffered only one combat
  casualty in her many naval combat campaigns, thereby earning the
  nickname "the Lucky Ship"; and
 
         WHEREAS, The battleship Texas is designated both a
  National Historic Landmark and a National Engineering Historic
  Landmark; and
 
         WHEREAS, The battleship Texas is an asset of the State of
  Texas, under the care and direction of the Texas Parks and
  Wildlife Department and supported by the Battleship Texas
  Foundation; and
 
         WHEREAS, The Battleship Texas Foundation is a nonprofit
  corporation charged with raising funds to restore and promote the
  educational value of the battleship Texas; and
 
         WHEREAS, The Battleship Texas Foundation board consists of
  retired military leaders, active business and civic leaders, and
  concerned community volunteers who maintain a focus on the
  historical and educational significance of the battleship Texas;
  and
 
         WHEREAS, The Battleship Texas Foundation has solicited
  funding for restoration, enhancements, and a Youth Overnight
  Program serving organized youth groups across the state; and
 
         WHEREAS, The battleship Texas has become an icon of Texas
  at the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site; now,
  therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby recognize the historic and cultural value of
  the battleship Texas and commend the Battleship Texas Foundation
  for its ongoing efforts to preserve this unique asset of the
  State of Texas for future generations; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  the Battleship Texas Foundation as an expression of esteem from
  the Texas Senate.
