SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 421
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
  recognizing Sophia Perez DeLa'O on the grand occasion of her
  102nd birthday; and
 
         WHEREAS, This gracious lady is well known for her charm and
  generosity of spirit, and she is a revered resident of Austin;
  and
 
         WHEREAS, Sophia Perez DeLa'O was born March 13, 1907, in
  Mexico and moved to Austin at the age of nine; she grew up in East
  Austin, and she and Nicholas Avila had three children, Josie,
  Fernando, and Joe Avila; and
 
         WHEREAS, She later married Florentino DeLa'O, a baker, and
  the couple managed La Oriental Bakery in East Austin and also
  sold bread out of their house on East 9th Street; they had a
  daughter, Hilda DeLa'O, and together they raised the four
  children as a family; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mrs. DeLa'O is a beloved and respected member of
  her community, and she is noted for her courage, her compassion
  for others, and her enthusiasm for living each day to the
  fullest; and
 
         WHEREAS, In honor of her birthday and the 80th birthday of
  her son Joe Avila, friends and family are joining them as they
  celebrate the occasion together on April 1, 2009, at Joe's Bakery
  and Coffee Shop; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby recognize Sophia Perez DeLa'O as a treasured
  citizen of our state and extend to her best wishes for a memorable
  102nd birthday; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
