SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 422
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Joe Avila on the notable occasion of his 80th birthday;
  and
 
         WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman is well known for
  his wisdom and generosity of spirit, and he is a respected
  citizen of Austin; and
 
         WHEREAS, Joe Avila was born April 14, 1929; he served the
  nation in the armed services during the Korean War; after the
  war, he returned home and married Paula Robles, who worked at his
  parents' bakery, and the couple raised two daughters, Carolina
  Avila and Rose Maciel; and
 
         WHEREAS, Joe learned the bakery business from his
  stepfather Florentino DeLa'O, and in 1962 he opened his own
  bakery, Joe's Bakery and Coffee Shop; today, his daughters and
  his granddaughter, Regina Estrada, are ably carrying on his
  legacy as managers of this East Austin institution; and
 
         WHEREAS, In honor of his birthday and the 102nd birthday of
  his mother, Sophia Perez DeLa'O, family and friends are joining
  them as they celebrate the occasion together on April 1, 2009, at
  Joe's Bakery and Coffee Shop; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby congratulate Joe Avila on his 80th birthday
  and extend to him best wishes for a festive and enjoyable
  celebration of this milestone in his life; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
