SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 427
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize the Texas State Library and Archives Commission on the
  splendid occasion of its 100th anniversary; and
         WHEREAS, Originally called the Texas Library and
  Historical Commission, the Texas State Library and Archives
  Commission began when Governor Thomas Campbell signed its
  enacting legislation into law on March 19, 1909; a yearlong
  anniversary celebration will start at noon on March 19, 2009, 
  with a Centennial Kickoff Birthday Party on the Capitol steps;  and
         WHEREAS, The Texas State Library and Archives Commission
  preserves and documents the heritage and culture of Texas and
  Texans; it collects, organizes, and conserves official
  government records, some of which date to the 18th century, and
  other significant resources, such as journals, manuscripts,
  newspapers, photographs, and historical maps; and
         WHEREAS, The commission provides services and support for
  public libraries in the state's network and for a consortium of
  academic and medical libraries; it assists some 20,000 Texans
  with visual or reading disabilities through the Talking Book
  Program; the commission makes available more than 80,000 fiction
  and nonfiction books and 80 national magazines in a variety of
  formats, including cassette, compact disc, Braille, and
  large-print texts; and
         WHEREAS, The commission headquarters are in the Lorenzo de
  Zavala State Archives and Library Building in the Capitol
  Complex; the building, originally completed in 1961, is now being
  renovated and will contain a state-of-the-art research facility
  for the people of Texas and a remarkably improved
  climate-controlled storage area that will safeguard the state's
  valuable historical documents; and
         WHEREAS, Additional Commission facilities include the
  State Records Center and Talking Book annex in Austin and the Sam
  Houston Regional Library and Research Center located in Liberty;
  and
         WHEREAS, The Texas State Library and Archives Commission
  provides a historical foundation for present-day government
  actions and serves as an important resource for Texas studies,
  and it is to be commended for its 100 years of service to the
  state; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby commend the administrators and staff of the
  Texas State Library and Archives Commission for their valuable
  work and services and extend to all best wishes for an
  outstanding centennial celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an
  expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
