SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 451
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Jack Quarles Whitley
 
         WHEREAS, Friends and family are mourning the loss of Jack
  Quarles Whitley of Burleson, who passed away on February 22,
  2009, at the age of 88; and
 
         WHEREAS, Born on September 28, 1920, to Eula Quarles and
  William Elmo Whitley in Elkhart, Jack Whitley received his early
  education at the Masonic Home and School of Texas in Fort Worth,
  where he played on the Mighty Mites football team under legendary
  coach Rusty Russell; he attended Lon Morris College and then
  Stephen F. Austin State University until answering his nation's
  call to duty during World War II; he served in the Army Air Force
  Reserve as the captain of a bomber crew on Okinawa; remaining on
  active duty until 1952, he helped coach the Carswell Air Force
  Base football team to a national service championship in 1951;
  his service in the reserve extended until the late 1960s, when he
  retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel; and
 
         WHEREAS, Mr. Whitley became the football coach at the
  Masonic Home and School in 1952, and he remained there for
  approximately 10 years; he later oversaw the team at Fort Worth
  Polytechnic High School and was then appointed superintendent of
  the Tarrant County Children's Home; he subsequently returned to
  the Masonic Home and School to serve as superintendent and
  finally worked as a probation officer until his retirement in
  1996; and
 
         WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, Mr. Whitley enjoyed
  the love and support of his wife, the former Durstyne Moore, with
  whom he shared more than six decades, until her passing in 2004;
  the couple were blessed with three daughters, Donna, Karla, and
  Jackie, and had the pleasure of welcoming six grandchildren and
  five great-grandchildren into their family; and
 
         WHEREAS, Jack Whitley will be greatly missed by all who
  knew him, but he leaves behind a wealth of memories that will be
  treasured for years to come by those privileged to share in the
  richness of his life; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jack Quarles
  Whitley and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
  to his daughters, Donna Jones and her husband, Johnny, Karla
  Purcell and her husband, Robert, and Jackie Patridge Stewart and
  her husband, Bernie; to his grandchildren, Kelsey Jones Parnell
  and her husband, Todd, Paige Purcell, Grady Purcell and his wife,
  Jennifer, Keely Patridge, Brad Patridge, and Dursty Patridge
  Engel and her husband, Rick; to his great-grandsons, Ace and Hudd
  Parnell, Logan and Luke Purcell, and Jack Engel; and to his other
  relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
  this day, it do so in memory of Jack Whitley.
