SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 467

John D. Moseley |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Sherman in mourning the loss of John D. Moseley, who |
|
died March 11, 2009, at the age of 93; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A pioneering educator and committed civic leader, |
|
John D. Moseley served as president of Austin College for 25 |
|
years, bringing growth, financial stability, and innovative |
|
methods and programs to the campus; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A native of Greenville, Dr. Moseley earned his |
|
bachelor's degree at East Texas State University and his master's |
|
and doctoral degrees at The University of Texas at Austin; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley began his career in government |
|
service; he served in the Bureau of the Budget in the Executive |
|
Office of the President of the United States, and he was the first |
|
executive director of the Texas Legislative Council; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley became president of Austin College in |
|
1953 during a time of declining enrollment as fewer students were |
|
taking advantage of the GI Bill; under his outstanding |
|
leadership, the college grew from 350 students to more than 1,000 |
|
by 1959, and the number of buildings on campus doubled during the |
|
first 10 years of his administration; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley made important changes in the program |
|
of study at Austin College, reestablishing an emphasis on the |
|
classics and instituting a curriculum rooted in |
|
interdisciplinary study; he also brought international programs |
|
to the campus, which gave students the opportunity to study |
|
abroad; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley was an important leader in the field |
|
of higher education, helping to create Independent Colleges and |
|
Universities of Texas and working to secure legislation to create |
|
the Texas Tuition Equalization Grant; he served in leadership |
|
positions with numerous professional organizations, including as |
|
chair of the Association of American Colleges and on the board of |
|
the American Council on Education; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A man of courage and vision with a passionate |
|
belief in the value of education, Dr. Moseley gave generously to |
|
others, and his wisdom, his dedication, and his valued counsel |
|
will not be forgotten by those who knew him; he was beloved by his |
|
family and friends, and he will long be remembered with affection |
|
and admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family and friends of Dr. John D. Moseley; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of John Moseley. |
