SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 467
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  John D. Moseley
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Sherman in mourning the loss of John D. Moseley, who
  died March 11, 2009, at the age of 93; and
 
         WHEREAS, A pioneering educator and committed civic leader,
  John D. Moseley served as president of Austin College for 25
  years, bringing growth, financial stability, and innovative
  methods and programs to the campus; and
 
         WHEREAS, A native of Greenville, Dr. Moseley earned his
  bachelor's degree at East Texas State University and his master's
  and doctoral degrees at The University of Texas at Austin; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley began his career in government
  service; he served in the Bureau of the Budget in the Executive
  Office of the President of the United States, and he was the first
  executive director of the Texas Legislative Council; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley became president of Austin College in
  1953 during a time of declining enrollment as fewer students were
  taking advantage of the GI Bill; under his outstanding
  leadership, the college grew from 350 students to more than 1,000
  by 1959, and the number of buildings on campus doubled during the
  first 10 years of his administration; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley made important changes in the program
  of study at Austin College, reestablishing an emphasis on the
  classics and instituting a curriculum rooted in
  interdisciplinary study; he also brought international programs
  to the campus, which gave students the opportunity to study
  abroad; and
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Moseley was an important leader in the field
  of higher education, helping to create Independent Colleges and
  Universities of Texas and working to secure legislation to create
  the Texas Tuition Equalization Grant; he served in leadership
  positions with numerous professional organizations, including as
  chair of the Association of American Colleges and on the board of
  the American Council on Education; and
 
         WHEREAS, A man of courage and vision with a passionate
  belief in the value of education, Dr. Moseley gave generously to
  others, and his wisdom, his dedication, and his valued counsel
  will not be forgotten by those who knew him; he was beloved by his
  family and friends, and he will long be remembered with affection
  and admiration by all who were privileged to share in his life;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family and friends of Dr. John D. Moseley; and, be it further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of John Moseley.
