SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 530

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Jack Yates High School Lions boys' basketball team, which recently won the University Interscholastic League Class 4A state championship title; and

WHEREAS, The Lions won their first state championship at the state tournament in Austin on March 14, 2009; named for the Reverend Jack Yates, Jack Yates High School has for 78 years been a positive influence throughout the Third Ward community; and

WHEREAS, These young athletes have demonstrated great talent and perseverance throughout the school year, and they can take great pride in their performance; and

WHEREAS, Under the superior leadership and expertise of head coach Greg Wise, the Lions have developed exceptional teamwork and discipline, and they have lived up to their school's motto, Character and Achievement; and

WHEREAS, Jack Yates High School and the City of Houston are proud of the Lions for their hard work, their impressive skills, and their fine sportsmanship; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend the Jack Yates High School Lions boys' basketball team on their successful season and extend congratulations to them on winning the University Interscholastic League Class 4A state championship title; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
