SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 536
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Richard P. Sheffield
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
  citizens of Jacksonville in mourning the loss of Richard P.
  Sheffield, who died March 17, 2009, at the age of 84; and
         WHEREAS, Richard P. Sheffield was born May 17, 1924, in
  Blox, Texas; he attended Kirbyville High School, where he
  excelled in athletics, earning letters in four sports and playing
  in the Texas-Louisiana State All-Star football game in 1941; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Sheffield served the nation during World War
  II as a member of the United States Navy; he attended Lamar Junior
  College and Tulane University, where he continued to excel in
  football, playing in the Blue-Gray game and the first Senior
  Bowl; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Sheffield began coaching at Beaumont High
  School, and he led the football team to its first district
  championship in 22 years before coming to Jacksonville in 1958;
  he assumed head coaching duties in 1959 and quickly became known
  for his fiercely competitive teams, which regularly contested
  the district championships and several times advanced to the
  state football playoffs; he was known for his demanding but fair
  approach and his ability to instill discipline and mental
  toughness in his teams; and
         WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he
  was beloved and respected by his family and countless friends,
  and he will long be remembered for his generous spirit and his
  many accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
  family of Richard P. Sheffield; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Richard P. Sheffield.
