SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 552
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |
|
|
recognize Paul Quinn College, which is commemorating 137 years of |
|
|
excellence in education with a week of events from March 28 |
|
|
through April 4, 2009, during its Founder's Observance 2009; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, One of the oldest liberal arts colleges for |
|
|
African Americans, Paul Quinn College was founded in Austin on |
|
|
April 4, 1872, by a group of African Methodist Episcopal |
|
|
ministers; it was relocated to Waco five years later and named |
|
|
Waco College, and trades such as blacksmithing, carpentry, |
|
|
tanning, and saddle work were taught to newly-freed slaves; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The college was chartered by the State of Texas in |
|
|
1881 and renamed Paul Quinn College in honor of Bishop William |
|
|
Paul Quinn, under whose direction the African Methodist |
|
|
Episcopal Church had developed districts throughout the South; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Under Bishop Quinn's leadership, the college |
|
|
greatly increased its land ownership and expanded its curriculum |
|
|
to include subjects like mathematics, Latin, music, and |
|
|
theology; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Today, Paul Quinn College is located in Dallas and |
|
|
continues to grow and expand under strong and determined |
|
|
leadership; with its slogan of "137 Years of Combining Intellect |
|
|
and Faith," the Founder's Observance 2009 serves to celebrate the |
|
|
college's rich past while embracing the challenges of the future; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
|
Legislature, hereby commend the students, faculty, and staff of |
|
|
Paul Quinn College for their dedication to the school's founding |
|
|
principles and extend to them best wishes for a memorable |
|
|
Founder's Observance 2009; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
|
the college as an expression of high regard from the Texas |
|
|
Senate. |
