         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Paul Quinn College, which is commemorating 137 years of

  through April 4, 2009, during its Founder's Observance 2009; and
         WHEREAS, One of the oldest liberal arts colleges for
  African Americans, Paul Quinn College was founded in Austin on
  April 4, 1872, by a group of African Methodist Episcopal
  ministers; it was relocated to Waco five years later and named
  Waco College, and trades such as blacksmithing, carpentry,
  tanning, and saddle work were taught to newly-freed slaves; and
         WHEREAS, The college was chartered by the State of Texas in
  1881 and renamed Paul Quinn College in honor of Bishop William
  Paul Quinn, under whose direction the African Methodist
  Episcopal Church had developed districts throughout the South;
  and

  greatly increased its land ownership and expanded its curriculum
  to include subjects like mathematics, Latin, music, and

         WHEREAS, Today, Paul Quinn College is located in Dallas and
  continues to grow and expand under strong and determined
  leadership; with its slogan of "137 Years of Combining Intellect
