SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 567
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Pioneering men and women, known as cowboys, |
|
|
helped establish the American West; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The cowboy embodies the characteristics of |
|
|
honesty, integrity, courage, compassion, respect, a strong work |
|
|
ethic, and patriotism, and the cowboy spirit exemplifies |
|
|
strength of character, sound values, and good common sense; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The cowboy archetype transcends ethnicity, |
|
|
gender, geographic boundaries, and political affiliation; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The cowboy is an excellent steward of the land and |
|
|
its creatures; with a livelihood that depends on the land, |
|
|
cowboys understand the importance of working to protect and |
|
|
enhance the environment; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Cowboy traditions have been part of the American |
|
|
culture for generations; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The cowboy continues to be an important part of |
|
|
the economy through the work of approximately 727,000 ranchers in |
|
|
all 50 states, and cowboys contribute to the well-being of nearly |
|
|
every county in the nation; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Annual attendance at professional and working |
|
|
ranch rodeo events exceeds 27 million fans, and rodeo is the |
|
|
seventh most popular spectator sport in the nation; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Participation in rodeo and other organizations |
|
|
that promote and encompass the livelihood of the cowboy spans |
|
|
race, gender, and generations; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The cowboy is a central figure in literature, |
|
|
film, and music, and this American icon occupies a central place |
|
|
in the public imagination; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Cowboys and cowgirls have played a vital part in |
|
|
the development of this state and nation, and it is fitting to |
|
|
recognize their historic importance and the ongoing |
|
|
contributions they make to their communities today; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st |
|
|
Legislature, hereby join citizens in Texas and across the nation |
|
|
in observing National Day of the Cowboy on July 25, 2009; and, be |
|
|
it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
|
prepared in honor of the American cowboy. |
