SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 567
         WHEREAS, Pioneering men and women, known as cowboys,
  helped establish the American West; and
         WHEREAS, The cowboy embodies the characteristics of
  honesty, integrity, courage, compassion, respect, a strong work
  ethic, and patriotism, and the cowboy spirit exemplifies
  strength of character, sound values, and good common sense; and
         WHEREAS, The cowboy archetype transcends ethnicity,
  gender, geographic boundaries, and political affiliation; and
         WHEREAS, The cowboy is an excellent steward of the land and
  its creatures; with a livelihood that depends on the land,
  cowboys understand the importance of working to protect and
  enhance the environment; and
         WHEREAS, Cowboy traditions have been part of the American
  culture for generations; and
         WHEREAS, The cowboy continues to be an important part of
  the economy through the work of approximately 727,000 ranchers in
  all 50 states, and cowboys contribute to the well-being of nearly
  every county in the nation; and
         WHEREAS, Annual attendance at professional and working
  ranch rodeo events exceeds 27 million fans, and rodeo is the
  seventh most popular spectator sport in the nation; and
         WHEREAS, Participation in rodeo and other organizations
  that promote and encompass the livelihood of the cowboy spans
  race, gender, and generations; and
         WHEREAS, The cowboy is a central figure in literature,
  film, and music, and this American icon occupies a central place
  in the public imagination; and
         WHEREAS, Cowboys and cowgirls have played a vital part in
  the development of this state and nation, and it is fitting to
  recognize their historic importance and the ongoing
  contributions they make to their communities today; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby join citizens in Texas and across the nation
  in observing National Day of the Cowboy on July 25, 2009; and, be
  it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
  prepared in honor of the American cowboy.
