SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 612

WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the citizens of Pharr in celebrating the grand occasion of its centennial anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1909, the City of Pharr is marking this momentous anniversary with ceremonies throughout the year, culminating in the Centennial New Year's Gala of the Shield on December 31, 2009; and

WHEREAS, This year of celebration began with a flag-raising ceremony on January 17, 2009; Andrea Vela has been selected as Centennial Miss Pharr and will reign throughout the year; and

WHEREAS, In addition to its coveted status as an All-America City, Pharr is also a Preserve America City; the city's heritage was honored during the Toast of the Town Trolley Tour, which featured excerpts of Pharr's first fifty years and provided a narrative history of 27 sites that have been preserved for their historic value; and

WHEREAS, Other notable festivities this year include the Pharr Centennial Hub Phestival, the Heart Filled with Service observance, the Centennial Wine Tasting, and the Centennial Heritage Exhibit; the citizens of Pharr are justifiably proud of the important role their city has played in the history of our state, and they can look forward with confidence to a vibrant future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Pharr on their many contributions to the rich culture of Texas and extend to them best wishes for an exciting and memorable centennial celebration; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the citizens of Pharr as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
