SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 717
         WHEREAS, Sherry Cannedy of Wichita Falls has received the
  2008 Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History
  Award from Humanities Texas; and
         WHEREAS, The state affiliate of the National Endowment for
  the Humanities, the nonprofit Humanities Texas honors one
  teacher of Texas history every year as part of its annual
  Outstanding Teaching Awards; the Texas history award is named in
  memory of Linden Heck Howell, a former chair of the
  organization's board; the winning teacher receives $5,000 and
  his or her school receives $500 for the purchase of teaching
  materials; and
         WHEREAS, Sherry Cannedy teaches fourth grade social
  studies, reading, and writing at Southern Hills Elementary
  School in Wichita Falls; she attended Texas Tech University and
  earned her teaching degree at Midwestern State University; and
         WHEREAS, Known affectionately by her students as "Mrs.
  Texas," this dynamic educator sparks interest in Texas history by
  taking her students on field trips to the State Capitol and the
  Alamo and other Spanish missions; she encourages her students to
  share their knowledge of Texas history with their parents; and
         WHEREAS, Sherry Cannedy has written and directed a pageant
  of Texas history titled "The Spirit of Texas," performed every
  San Jacinto Day by the students at her school; she also shares her
  love of Texas history as a facilitator for the Lone Star
  Leadership Academy; and
         WHEREAS, By instilling in her students a deep appreciation
  of the history and traditions of the Lone Star State, Sherry
  Cannedy plays a vital role in the growth of Texas culture, and she
  indeed merits commendation for the great contribution she is
  making to her school and her community; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 81st
  Legislature, hereby congratulate Sherry Cannedy on winning the
  2008 Linden Heck Howell Outstanding Teaching of Texas History
  Award and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success
  and happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
  prepared for Sherry Cannedy as an expression of high regard from
  the Texas Senate.
